How to share a grocery list with your family or partner
Sharing a grocery list should take seconds — and then it should just work: one list, everyone can add to it, always up to date. Here's the simplest way to do it, plus the mistakes that make shared lists fall apart.
The quick way
- Make a list. Open EZlist on your phone or the web and create a list — name it for where you shop (e.g. "Groceries" or "Costco").
- Add a few items. Type what you need. No categories or units required.
- Share an invite link. Tap Share and EZlist hands you a link. Send it to your partner or family through Messages, WhatsApp, or email — however you already talk.
- They tap it and they're in. The link opens the same list on their phone. From then on, whatever anyone adds or checks off shows up for everyone, live.
That's it. There's no "export," no re-sending an updated copy, and nobody has to hunt for the latest version.
Why a shared list beats a group text
A group chat is where grocery lists go to get lost. Items scroll away, two people buy the same thing, and no one can tell what's still needed. A shared list keeps a single source of truth:
- Everyone edits the same list — not their own copy.
- Check-offs are visible — so you don't buy bread someone already grabbed.
- It's always current — add "milk" from the kitchen and it's there when your partner is at the store.
Tips for a shared list that actually sticks
- Keep one list per store. Don't pile groceries, hardware, and pharmacy into one — separate lists mean you open the right one at the right place.
- Add as you run out. The habit that makes it work: the second you notice you're low on something, add it. Because the list is shared, whoever shops next will see it.
- Invite the whole household. The more people who can add items, the fewer forgotten ones. Partners, roommates, kids — anyone who eats the groceries can help build the list.
Does everyone need the app?
Whoever you invite just taps the link and starts using the shared list — on iPhone, Android, or the web. It's free, and they can sign in with email, Google, or Apple.
